The curse of the convoy
By Justin Ling
February 4, 2022

Ever since a column of trucks, campers, and cars set off for Ottawa in January with a song in their hearts and a plan to remove our democratically-elected government, the members of the now-leaderless Conservative Party have been trying to find a way to greet them as liberators.

No matter how many photos of Nazi and Confederate flags have flown in the crowd, or how often the protesters have called for Justin Trudeau to be tried for treason, the Tories have tripped over themselves to find common cause with the occupiers.

When powerful people lend these movements credibility, it only entrenches these paranoid delusions. In the closed information environments of the convoy’s Facebook and Telegram channels, there is a whole alternate reality: Where the vaccines don’t work; where COVID-19 is a bioweapon; where Trudeau is set to impose a Chinese-style social credit system. We need to reject that worldview, not explain around it.

Of course the organizers have insisted they are not anti-vaccine, only anti-vaccine mandate. But that’s not very convincing. Several of the groups participating in the event are responsible for peddling junk science which claims the vaccines are deadly. One of the participating groups, Action4Canada — a group which argues that COVID-19 public health measures are “egregious crimes against the citizens of this nation” and that every politician who supported them must “pay for their crimes.”

Certainly, it is everyone’s right to avoid the shot. But sometimes exercising your rights means accepting the consequences.

Ling is entitled to his opinion, of course. But sometimes expressing an opinion can have consequences. Defaming millions of Canadians, attempting to deprive a minority of its constitutional rights, and spreading medical disinformation that will result in life-threatening conditions such as myocarditis are unacceptable. Ling's words amplified through the mass media carry more weight than the average Canadian's, and with great power comes great responsibility. Journalists are bound by a code of ethics and Ling has violated it by expressing dangerous, malicious views that will lead to public harm.

A reminder to his profession of what happened to op-ed writer and newspaper editor Julius Streicher:

Streicher was not a member of the military and did not take part in planning the Holocaust, or the invasion of other nations. Yet his pivotal role in inciting the extermination of Jews was significant enough, in the prosecutors' judgment, to include him in the indictment of Major War Criminals before the International Military Tribunal – which sat in Nuremberg, where Streicher had once been an unchallenged authority.

Most of the evidence against Streicher came from his numerous speeches and articles over the years. In essence, prosecutors contended that Streicher's articles and speeches were so incendiary that he was an accessory to murder, and therefore as culpable as those who actually ordered the mass extermination of Jews.

Streicher was acquitted of crimes against peace, but found guilty of crimes against humanity, and sentenced to death on 1 October 1946. (Source: Wikipedia)

Build a Guillotine

The darkest days of the French Revolution...a time when over 17,000 heads were severed from their bodies by a clever device called the "guillotine".

Steps

  1. Purchase some wood, rope, sheet metal aluminum, hammer, nails, tin snips, saw and a pulley at your local hardware store.
  2. Take two long, narrow wooden boards and create grooves in the sides with the saw. This allows the blade to cleanly slide down between the posts.
  3. Take a shorter board and place it across the top of the two posts. Nail it in place.
  4. Towards the bottom of the device, create a table for a victim to lie on.
  5. Take your sheet metal aluminum and cut it with a pair of tin snips so its edges are sharp. This will be your blade.
  6. Create a weight out of a heavy chunk of wood and place it on top of the blade. This will make the blade fall faster and make whatever you're going to cut go under more pressure, causing it to split.
  7. Take a saw and cut two semi-circles out of one long end of a piece of wood. When together, the two pieces will create a circle for the victim's head.
  8. Attach a rope to your blade and insert it into your device. Raise the blade and let it fall a few times to make sure it runs smoothly.

Build a Gallows

Gallows are tools made out of wood to resemble a frame, typically used for hangings and executions. There are several types of gallows, from a simple inverted 'L' shape, to the more complex full-frame-and-stand-with-trapdoor designs.

  • When trying to ensure neck snapping in hanging, try to loop the rope around the head at an angle, so that the knot is tilted off the centre of the neck. This forces the rope to twist as it falls, allowing neck snap page to be more easily achieved.
  • The heights of the gallows can be adjusted accordingly to personal style and preference.
  • The wood you are using to make the gallows should be hardwood, preferably oak as it is very sturdy, and quite resilient to rot after being Varathaned(®).
  • How you attach the pieces together is up to you. You can make complex box or dovetail joints, simple dado joints, or just use glue and nails, or a combination of them. However, whatever method you use, it is important to have the joints stable and steady, otherwise the gallows may break under a person's weight.

Tie a Hangman's Noose

The Hangman's noose is known for its strength under heavy weights and sudden movements, making it a good hook in an emergency. This article will show you how to tie one.

10 Second Summary

  1. Pull out at least 3 to 4 feet of rope.
  2. Fold 2 feet of rope into an S-shape.
  3. Pass the standing line of the rope under all three sections of the S.
  4. Wrap the end of the rope around the top of the S-shape 7 times.
  5. Pass the end of the rope through the bottom loop of the noose.
  6. Pull on the noose and standing line to tighten it.
